The Casino

Episode 4 of What We Do In The Shadows Season 3 begins with our vampire troupe deciding to head over to Las Vegas for the weekend. After snatching together some of their ancestral soil, the gang join their next door neighbours for the evening’s fun. During dinner, Guillermo is encouraged to clean up but he’s not exactly pleased about it, especially given he’s a bodyguard now. Nandor encourages the others to be a little more appreciative to Guillermo, but just as he starts opening up about his past, the gang are encouraged out to the casino. The Rat Pack happen to be performing, although Nadja is convinced that she was part of their troupe back in the day. While the ladies entertain themselves with the singers backstage, Guillermo watches from afar as Nandor plays a Big Bang Theory slot machine. As the night draws on though, he encourages Nandor to pack up his gear and head back to his room. When they get there though, there’s a big problem. Housekeeping have shown up in their absence and hoovered their room – including the ancestral soil. With the vamps losing their powers, Lazlo finds himself trying to speak to Sean normally. Given they’re best friends now, Sean opens up to him about his previous gambling addiction. Through all of this though, Nandor’s world is turned upside down. He was under the assumption that the world was set atop four elephants. Shout out to Discworld here! Well, Colin Robinson breaks the news that the Big Bang is how the universe was created. With all of our vampires in a deep state of depression, Guillermo returns from his big trip after collecting up the ancestral soil at key parts in the world. All of this crescendos into the gang collecting up money to pay back Sean, after rigging the boxing game of course. The gang watch in glee as one of the boxer’s heads comes clean off. Wow. As the episode comes to a close, our “big family” decide to head home again.

The Episode Review

What We Do In The Shadows continues to deliver hearty laughs in this episode, changing the focus to Vegas for a funny chapter that sees all of our vamps out of their comfort zone. Guillermo continues to be the real star of the show here, managing to present himself as a trusty bodyguard and heading off on a globe-trotting trip to bring back the soil for the gang. It’s a clever move, one that allows each of our vampires to engage in their own subplots back in Sin City. The Rat Pack subplot is a nice diversion for Nadja too while Lazlo is taken out of his comfort zone, unable to hypnotize the unsuspecting victims. With the gang back in their normal residency again at the end, we’ll have to wait and see what this show has in store for us.
