What happens when a serial killer and a woman who’s socially awkward meet? Well, according to this K-drama things get messy and life becomes a shade of grey. Kim Sum is an app developer who creates a dating app known as Somebody. Originally intended to help people find their perfect match, things soon go awry when a mysterious serial killer starts using the app to hunt and kill his victims. As we know murder is not good for business so Kim Sum decides to investigate and find the culprit. After all, how hard can it be to catch the creep using her app to murder women? Apparently, it is extremely difficult, especially if said serial killer gets close to you and uses his charms to knock you off your feet. Thriller K-dramas can be dark and delve into deep disturbing minds of evil people but what sets Somebody apart is eroticism. If you are an avid K-drama watcher these scenes might be a bit jarring. It is not your typical K-drama where the leads hold hands in episode 7 and kiss in episode 10. Be prepared to see more of Kim Young Kwang than you bargained for. He effortlessly pulls off this twisted character, proving his acting range is unmatched. Kang Hae Lim also cements her status as an amazing actress in this dark thriller. It is far from what we have seen her in the past. Her character Kim Sum is deeply layered and she gives a magnetic performance and makes it look easy to appear expressionless. The only issue with Somebody stems from the lack of logic in some of the decisions the cast makes. As viewers, we would expect a character who is a cop like Yeong Gi-eun to know the dangers of meeting a stranger alone, even after he hurt her in the past. Throughout the eight-episode series, one can’t help but wonder and feel frustrated by these choices. At some point, you will feel like screaming, “ Why? Who does that?” to your screen. Other than that, the series is a nice thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. The Bonnie and Clyde aspect of the show is thought-provoking. It will make you wonder how far you would go to be with someone who completely understands you. When it comes to love, where exactly is the line between right and wrong? Where can our fears drive us to? Do we all have darkness in us? Somebody will also remind you of the dangers that lurk in online dating. In a world where your supposed ideal mate is just a click away, it is tempting to be lost in the excitement of it all. However, there are a lot of psychopaths using the internet for their violent, twisted desires that will make your skin crawl. It is also refreshing to see queer representation in a K-drama without the typical aloofness that follows in most dramas. Mok won and her girlfriend are depicted as a normal couple and we get to see them being close and touchy with each other. Their relationship is shown for what it is, instead of subtly being alluded to. This K-drama is different and that is a good thing, as it has its own allure. If you are not one to stomach deeply disturbing scenes, you should probably mentally prepare yourself before watching it. As far as thrillers go, this one pulls no punches.
