It’s a no-nonsense, action-packed romp that has its heart in the right place and does so by paying tribute to the source material it’s adapting. A mountain of a man, Reacher is a capable fighter with intelligence and strength, roaming across the United States taking odd jobs and investigating suspicious and frequently dangerous situations. His latest hotspot takes him to Margrave, Georgia where he’s quickly suspected of murder. With the town seemingly rife with secrets, seedy characters and a potential counterfeiting scheme, it’s up to Reacher, fellow detective Finlay and officer Roscoe to uncover the truth before it’s too late. Although the ending may be a little cheesy and the mystery a tad predictable, in all honesty it’s easy to overlook these things when the show gets so much right. Reacher makes up for its predictability with a well-written and deep central trio of characters, a lot of visceral action and plenty of suspenseful, nail-biting tension. There are some solid action sequences in here too, drip-fed across the 8 episodes, and it’s helped along by a quick wit and a sense of humour used perfectly as comedic levity. An on-running joke about animal feed and another about peach pie are particular highlights, but make no mistake about it – this show isn’t an outright funny series. This is a brutal and dark action thriller and there are some genuinely disturbing sequences here. One death in the final episode feels like something right out of a Mortal Kombat fatality. Likewise, there are some pretty gnarly and bloody crime scenes here too. Those that are a tad squeamish should probably bear that in mind! However, don’t let that deter you. Reacher is a really solid and well written show. It’s an action-packed romp with a consistent level of tension and thrills across its run-time. If you’re in the mood for a good ol’ fashioned action thriller, Reacher is an absolute must-watch.
