How To Initiate

How do you initiate first sex? This is the taboo question that begins episode 2 of Lovestruck In The City as our characters tentatively discuss their love lives. We then cut back 5 years prior to see Kyeong-Jun and Rin-I at the cinema on a date. Only, Rin-I suddenly turns her filter off and asks why they haven’t had sex yet. After a pretty humorous segment involving a rogue popcorn landing on someone’s head, we cut to them in the bedroom together. Things are incredibly awkward though as they try to romantically engage with one another. Eventually they begin kissing as we cut to moments in the present with Kyeong-Jun and Rin-I expressing very different ideas over how it went. We then cut to 1 year before as Jae-Won awakens confused; Eun-O appears outside the window pulling faces to make him laugh. Some slick white scribbles over her face accompany this as the quirky, light-hearted tone of this continues. Jae-Won begins laughing as the pair eventually head out together. A montage ensues as we see Eun-O and Jae-Won grow closer, surfing and running up the beach. The pair continue to spend time together, especially when Jae-Won teaches her how to surf properly. Although, she does end up hurting herself while practicing. Jae-Won patches Eun-O up though as she proclaims, “I’m hurt, but it was fun.” The two stare longingly into one another’s eyes as the slight glimmers of romance begin to crackle. This look lingers, eventually turning into a tender kiss… and so much more. Jae-Won tells her he loves her and as candles burn, the two have sex. Only… they’ve only been dating for a week. When Jae-Won awakens in the morning, Eun-O is gone and down by the beach walking her dog. Only…she greets another man there and it looks like they’re dating. The reason she tore away from him is because Eun-O was putting up her fake persona and not her real self. As she reveals this to the interviewer in the present, the episode comes to an end.

The Episode Review

Happy Christmas readers! Lovestruck In The City unusually drops its second episode on Christmas Day, showing us 30 minutes of titillation and young love. In fact, the only really noteworthy part of this episode comes from showing more of Eun-O’s deception. However, it does so around a myriad of montages and intimate scenes between characters that feel like they’ve been plucked right out of a show produced in the West. It’s very obvious that Lovestruck In The City is trying to appeal to an International audience, with the parties on the beach and the documentary style feeding back into these ideas. That’s not necessarily a bad thing of course, but it will undoubtedly alienate some people expecting a more conventional dish of kimchi. Despite that, Lovestruck In The City delivers a pretty enjoyable episode, leaving the door wide open for the upcoming episodes next week.
