Calcio Storico Highland Games Freediving Roller Derby Kok Boru Catch Fetiche Makepung Lampit Pehlwani Ever since humanity inhabited the Earth, the desire for besting one another and competing has evolved and grown over time to form the core of our entertainment. From the Romans and their Colosseum through to the global domination of football (soccer), these Goliath sports have captured the imagination of people worldwide. Nestled within these mammoth events are a number of interesting and unique sports that have a rich line of tradition and are unlike anything else on Earth. From Caber tossing in the Highland Games to wrestling in the Congo, Home Game is Netflix’s latest sport documentary series that takes a closer look at some of the more extreme and unique offerings of entertainment around the world. Each episode clocks in at around 30 minutes or so, making it a really easy show to dip in and out of, and the different episodes can be chosen in any order. There’s a good amount of history, talking head segments and reality fly-on-the-wall scenes that help give a comprehensive break down of each sport and its significance. There’s 8 different sports to choose from here too and Netflix have gone all-out to try and include as much variation as possible. The episode on Freediving is particularly fascinating, as is the aforementioned Highland Games but to be honest there’s enough variety here to find something to enjoy regardless of your interest in some of the more bizarre and unique offerings on display. Stylistically, the series remains pretty consistent throughout and there’s not a lot in the way of humour or quips. Predominantly, this is much more of an informative documentary series and the episodes do a great job capturing the rich history and significance of each sport. It may not be the best documentary on Netflix but it is one of the better offerings on the platform. The historical archival footage and explanations for some of the events are a nice inclusion too and the globe-hopping is certainly welcome too. It’s not perfect but it is one well worth checking out.
