It’s a show that unashamedly leans into all the best parts of thrillers like 24 and Fauda, mixing that up with a globe-trotting adventure and a gripping espionage mystery. Despite some plot contrivances and a couple of last minute twists that don’t quite work, Hit and Run is certainly a sure-fire hit. Split across 9 chapters, Hit and Run begins with a man named Segev, who finds his life turned upside down when his wife Danielle is killed in a hit and run accident. With mysterious forces working in the shadows of Tel Aviv, Segev soon learns all is not what it seems. As he starts investigating Danielle’s death, a massive conspiracy is unveiled. After the second chapter, the focus changes to New York for the rest of the story. Segev follows a breadcrumb trail of clues here – some more contrived than others – while teaming up with journalist Naomi and his friend Ron. Along the way, he engages in plenty of car chases, shootouts and shocking revelations that help to make this a really bingeable show. It’s worth noting though that Hit and Run is not without its flaws. Narratively, there are a couple of twists that really don’t work. Furthermore, a couple of clues Segev finds are mired in a heavy dose of contrivance. It’s not a deal-breaker but it is enough to leave a niggling sense of annoyance. Thankfully, the mystery itself is absolutely gripping. The story takes a lot of turns along the way, whiplashing from New York to Tel Aviv and back again during some of the later chapters. This dual focus gives the story a little more urgency, while also freshening up the colour palette and pacing. However, the show does end on the usual Netflix cliffhanger too. In fact, while there are a couple of resolutions to the main plot, it’s all largely kept at arm’s length for a second season. Whether the streaming giants actually renew this one or not remains to be seen, especially with their so-so track record for trigger-happy cancellations. Personally, I think there’s enough here to warrant a renewal but it remains to be seen if the data backs that up or not. The characters here are also a bit of a mixed bag too, which could make that decision much more difficult While Naomi, Tali and Ron are reasonably well acted and likable, Sergev is a difficult protagonist to warm to. His whole shtick is to not show much emotion, but his bloody history and remorseless actions here make him a hard sell at the best of times. Overall though, Hit and Run is an enthralling popcorn-munching thriller. It’s certainly not without its flaws, and its main protagonist is screaming out for some charisma. However, as a gripping summer blockbuster, this one certainly ticks all the right boxes.
