Renewed Or Cancelled?
My Liberation Notes is a calm, reflective and surprisingly deep drama tackling the humdrum of normal life and the crippling brutality of long commutes. With themes around existentialism, purpose, passion and society’s expectations for us, this is one intriguing drama. This 16 episode show has been a thoroughly enjoyable watch over the weeks, but if you’ve been following this you may be wondering if this one’s been renewed or cancelled.
What is My Liberation Notes Season 1 about?
The show takes place between the contrasting vistas of the quiet countryside and bustling metropolis of Seoul. The main character here (and our narrator at random intervals) is Mi-Jeong (Kim Ji-Won), the youngest daughter of a trio of siblings. She’s shy and an introvert but also lonely and feels unfulfilled in life. Her sister, Gi-Jeong (Lee El), is the eldest and is very hot tempered. She spends a lot of her time travelling back and forth from Seoul to Sanpo village because of her job. She has a lot of issues in her life and is desperate to find love. Finally there’s Chang-Hee (Lee Min-Ki), the middle child, who wants to leave his childhood home in Sanpo and has big dreams of becoming rich and living a fulfilled life. Circled around all this is a mysterious man named Mr Gu, who arrives in Sangpo with a dark past. He drinks a lot and no one knows much about him. Intrigued, Yeom Mi-Jeong decides to approach him. Has My Liberation Notes been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, JTBC have not renewed My Liberation Notes for season 2. Given the respectable ratings over the weeks, it’ll be interesting to see if they actually do renew this for a follow-up. The ratings began with a rather small 2.9% share nationwide but since then, has been increasing every week, with rates now up to around 4.5% averagely. Episode 12 is actually the highest thus far, with rates reaching 4.9% amidst a busy weekend line-up. Against such stiff competition, that’s pretty impressive. However, given most k-dramas wrap up their stories in a single season, it’s very rare to find these sort of shows renewed. Based on that, we predict My Liberation Notes will not be renewed. We’ll be sure to update this section with more details as they become available.
What we know about season 2 so far:
Most Korean dramas are reserved to one season and with the rare exception of ongoing Netflix shows (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce, Hospital Playlist etc.) then it seems unlikely that this one will be renewed. However, there is always the possibility that the actors return for a follow-up or even a spin-off ala. the Reply series. Given the nature of this series, we could even see a whole different show focused on Mr Gu’s past or even jump forward in time to see how all of our characters are getting on in the future. We’ll have to wait and see if this one’s greenlit or not. We generally aim to update this page when more information becomes available.
