The Heavens Will Fall
Episode 6 of Copenhagen Cowboy starts with us over at Nicklas’ place. With a sword by his side and his sister on the bed, Nicklas reveals that she has an important task ahead and he’s awoken her specifically to “find a girl”. That being Miu of course. Nicklas brings in a hunter and tasks him with bringing his sister nourishment so she can get back to her full strength again soon. And it doesn’t take long for him to work, heading into the woods and shooting down a man on the phone, blowing his brains out.
Is Ai returned to Hulda safe and sound?
Meanwhile, Miu tells Hulda that she’s done a big favour for Chiang in exchange for bringing her daughter Ai back. As they meet out in the woods, Miu confirms that the girl will be returned to stay for good. While she may not stay for good, she’s definitely not going to be taken by Chiang again. Miu and Hulda head to Chiang’s fight club together and after waiting for the boss, he invites them in. Ai is sitting with Chiang while they draw. Ai happens to be drawing flowers while Chiang has drawn snakes. He’s not particularly happy with the terms of this deal, especially when he reveals that Ai is actually his daughter. He says goodbye to her and the child is returned to Hulda, holding up his end of the bargain.
Does Miu kill Mr Chiang?
Miu decides to stick around at the club, confirming that they won’t be seeing each other again in the future. With Miu alone with Chiang, we learn the truth of the matter while this club owner paces the room. She stole his semen and blood and did so while talking about loving him. Chiang likens her to a snake, hence the picture he drew earlier. Chiang encourages Miu to come to his room that night and help with his migraines. However, what ensues is something far more dramatic. Chiang leads her to him through a path of petals that night, deciding that they’re connected and asking her to marry him. Miu refuses, and the pair end up fighting as a result. A series of strobed shots eventually lead to Miu beating Chiang to a bloody pulp, killing him and walking away. Over at Nicklas’ place, our hunter cooks up some meat for the resurrected to eat, along with a glass of wine. She only eats a thin slice of meat and immediately she faces Nicklas and touches his heart. “You’ve been a naughty boy.” She says. She points out that “she” is many, which seems to be referring to Miu. Nicklas’ sister gets dressed up in a red jumpsuit and prepares for what’s to come.
What happens out in the field? What are the flares?
Miu heads back into the woods again and meets several other girls wearing a blue jumpsuit. They happen upon the dead body the hunter shot and continue on. The trio walk together silently, touching one another’s chests as a form of greeting, and finding more likeminded souls. They head together and watch a bunch of pink and blue flares out in a field. This seems to hint toward some sort of spaceship, at least if what we’ve heard before in this show is anything to go by. Anyway, the camera rotates round to show numerous girls in these jumpsuits, each watchinG the same thing. Nicklas’ sister suddenly screams to the heavens, a reverberating chime that echoes out across to all the girls. Miu clutches her ears in pain and begins crying, while the scene shows a couple of surreal shots of this woman, silhouetted and seemingly blasting yellow lasers from her eyes.
How does Copenhagen Cowboy end?
We then jump to Miroslav, who gets on a video call with someone (who looks a lot like Hideo Kojima in sunglasses!) who claims that Miu is now in the north. She’s exterminated quite a few people already. This man gives Miroslav some advice on how to survive, telling him that he has to go and see the Giants. Only the Giants will be able to fight with Miu. He’s told to be careful as we fade to black.
The Episode Review
So from what we’ve learned across the season, it would appear that Miu and the other girls really are aliens and they’re these women in the blue jumpsuits. It seems Miroslav knows more than he’s letting on and it could well be a case of the invasion of the body snatchers here. The Giants are unlikely to refer to the New York Giants football team and could well be hinting that Nicklas’ sister is actually one of these “giants”. This would explain why Miu is so scared of her. Furthermore, it seems Miu is acting like judge, jury and executioner, deciding to either give people “a new life” (like Hulda and her daughter) or causing death to befall anyone who comes near her, especially now that she has short hair, which are all elements of Miroslav’s dialogue earlier in the season. If 1899 was cancelled for getting a good number of views as a mystery series though, Copenhagen Cowboy has absolutely no chance. The aesthetic and visual style is fine and there are some really neat shots but it’s not going to be enough to keep people hooked with this one. Miu has very little character growth, given she’s amazing at everything from the start and thus, there’s never any danger of her being hurt. Likewise, the revolving door of characters does nothing to help this and Nicklas’s character is weak and not a threat, especially after the incident at the pig pen. Ultimately, Copenhagen Cowboy is an artistic project that fails to get going and when it does, the mystery and narrative are tepid at best. And to top it all off? This one ends with a frustrating cliffhanger. What a shame.
