Strange symbols, interesting iconography and some well-rounded characters helped make this a mainstay on the mystery circuit. Last year’s story changed the game, delivering an intriguing dive into an alternate world, with a suitably agonizing cliffhanger ready for this third and final season to round everything out nicely and answer all the big questions. Well, Atiye (The Gift) is finally back and these 8 episodes certainly do their best to wrap everything up with a neat bow at the end. However, the ensuing result is more a serviceable tangle that gets the job done than a pretty and decisive conclusion. The story here picks up (unsurprisingly) after the events of season 3. Atiye is back and she’s dead-set on finding her daughter Aden no matter what. Strange visions, pine cones and the sound of fire crackling provide some juicy clues to go on for the ensuing series to follow. Joining her for this hunt is returning husband Erhan, who teams up with Serdar in secret to crack the symbols and find out what it all means. It doesn’t take long though for Atiye to find a brand new mystery – and prophecy- to lean on across its 8 episode run. Among those mysterious encounters, we’ve got a countdown timer, Egyptian iconography and a world-ending apocalypse to contend with. All of this is sprinkled across the season well, although the finale does feel rushed and fails to really answer everything in a meaningful way. The ending to any story is the hardest thing to get right and for mystery shows like this, the pressure is greater than it ordinarily would be to deliver. For that alone Atiye gets a bit of a pass but the contrived nature of the final resolution does take the sting out this Turkish tail. For fans who have followed this show through the years, Atiye has always thrived on its mystery. RTo be honest, this year’s effort does a pretty good job throwing in some intriguing new ideas and more of an origin to what’s been going on than it has done before. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it enjoyable and watchable all the same? Without a doubt. Sure, it may have some plot contrivances and a couple of eyebrow raising segments (watch out for a tiny branch almost falling on Atiye and causing serious damage!) but the show has an undeniable charm that carries into this finale season. The final episode laboriously squeezes the lid to this mystery box shut, but it does so with just enough competence to make these three seasons worth watching.
