Baton Rouge
Episode 8 of AJ And The Queen begins with Robert and AJ arriving at the hospital in Baton Rouge after a swinging incident at the park. After flashing back to the past during a Christmas performance, Robert decides to try and get AJ seen faster, and does so by finding a guy called Christian. After giving him advice on his drag act, AJ manages to finally get seen a little faster. Out in the waiting room however, Robert finds a message from AJ’s Mum and manages to hack into his phone. Seeing how many messages she’s left, he replies and asks what AJ’s allergies are before the phone goes dead. As it does, he approaches AJ and questions her about why she hasn’t messaged back. At the hospital, Robert is confronted by the doctor where he manages to talk his way out of the situation by telling her that AJ is a pageant star and he’s her coach. AJ finds out she has a small fracture but as the doctor takes a look at her arm, or at least attempts to, we’re graced with various flashes to the past for the different times she was in hospital. Meanwhile Damien tries to get back on the road and while Lady Danger finds herself in prison, Damien finds the false bottom on the suitcase and it turns out she was playing him all along and wanted the money for herself. She tells him to bail her out and if he does, half will be his. However, he refuses, telling her the money is all his. While AJ is in pain, Robert is taken away by the police thanks to the concerns various people have about his relationship with the child. Just as things look set to take a turn for the worst, the nurse arrives and clears everything up, surrounding AJ’s story about her mother being an exotic dancer. As AJ wanders through the hospital trying to find Robert, he does the same thing, dressing in an elaborate Jamaican disguise where they eventually wind up in each other’s arms and leave together. Although AJ and Robert’s storyline continues to deliver the goods, the sub-plot involving Damien and Lady Danger does not. It all feels a little lackadaisical and fails to hit the same comedic stride our duo achieves through the season’s run. As these two stories continue to run parallel to one another, it’s only a matter of time before they converge again. With two episodes to go, who knows how this one will end.
