The Boys
Similarities – Good Characters & Violence
Armed with a compelling narrative, an interesting, satirical look at superhero culture and a smattering of blood and gore along the way, this one is a bloody good time. The characters are well written, the continuing storyline nicely paced and with a third season on the horizon, The Boys is certainly one of the easiest recommendations to give.
Devilman Crybaby
Similarities – Tone & Violence
Devilman: Crybaby is arguably one of the more controversial and interesting anime to be released in 2018. The unique blend of violence, sexually charged imagery and breathtaking, hedonistic art makes it a fascinating but largely divisive animated title. The story begins much like many others in this category. An ordinary boy called Akira finds his world changed forever when he attends a strange party with his friend Ryo and merges with a devil to fight the forces of evil. Acting as a hybrid devil/human, Akira spends his time outside school hunting demons to protect humanity from their scourge that threatens to destroy the world. It’s a simple story but one that’s told really well; the artwork is gorgeously rendered and for that alone, it’s worth watching. Dragon Ball Z
Similarities – Action & Fighting
In its simplest form, Dragon Ball Z is an animated soap opera complete with big fights, vibrant animation and well written characters. Its loud, oftentimes intense and its unique blend of fighting and good pacing make it an impressive animated option. The show itself spans for many sagas, each broken down with a “big boss” to fight. Favourites include Freiza, Cell and Majin Buu but there’s a lot of fighting and drama in this show. If you’re in the mood for some high-octane fighting, this one’s worth checking out. One-Punch Man
Similarities – Comedy & OP Superheroes
The idea of a hero being able to defeat any enemy with a single punch may seem like a strange concept but the way this 12 episode anime executes its concept is nothing short of magnificent. While there is a second season, the original is superior in almost every way. Armed with a sharp wit, brilliant voice acting and beautiful artwork, One Punch Man combines over the top action with comedy to produce one of the finest anime out there. Doom Patrol
Similarities – Characters & Action
Doom Patrol is one of the quirkier superhero shows out there and much like The Umbrella Academy, thrives on its character-driven set-up. Doom Patrol really leans into its absurdity and the character development thrives because of it. The characters are interesting, with multiple issues that manifest across the two seasons. The team have their own problems to contend with and the second season does end on a pretty abrupt cliffhanger. However, there’s some excellent material here that’s well worth checking out. Preacher
Similarities – Violence & Craziness
Based on the comic book series of the same name, Preacher is a well written, bloody, violent romp that’s certainly worth checking out. The basic premise revolves around a preacher enlisting the help of a vampire and his ex to find God. Only, the story goes so much deeper than that. This one does require a bit of patience to begin with, introducing a host of different characters and jumping around a lot. If you can take to the tone though, this one should definitely quench your thirst for more craziness. Across the four seasons, this one quickly becomes one of AMC’s best originals.
Harley Quinn
Similarities – Quirky Characters & Tone
Harley Quinn is everything 2020’s Birds Of Prey should have been. Set in the world of Gotham, Harley Quinn is a surprisingly well written and quirky animation. The story here centers on Harley Quinn, who sets out to make a name for herself in Gotham City. Stuck in the shadows, and referred to as “Joker’s Girlfriend”, Harley remains determined to change the opinions of all those who would stand in her way. With lots of action and some nicely timed humour, this is one of the more surprising small-screen comic book series.
Spider-Man (1994)
Similarities – Action & Superhero Woes
Out of all the animated variations of Spider-Man over the years, the 1994 edition is by far the best. With a good blend of lighthearted humour, colourful artwork and nicely rendered action, Spider-Man is brought to life in a series that stays true to the comics. The story here is virtually the same, with unpopular science student Peter Parker bitten by a radioactive spider. This, in turn, gives him superpowers. Haunted by the memory of his dead Uncle Ben, Spider-Man battles various foes throughout the series whilst trying to juggle his academic studies. To complicate matters further are various love interests, including Mary-Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy. With five seasons of action to get through, Spider-Man is well worth checking out.
X-Men (1994)
Similarities – Large Ensemble & Story
On the subject of 90’s cartoons, one cannot miss off X-Men. Faithful to the comic books, X-Men is far superior to its big screen brothers. The story here sets itself in a unique world where mutants (people with genetically endowed superpowers) are shunned and hated by the public. Professor Charles Xavier’s school is the only safe haven, where he trains up a rogue band of heroes known as the X-Men. A split forms in the mutant divisions though, as Magneto disagrees with Xavier’s teachings. This culminates in many spectacular battles across the season, and lots of memorable arcs. There’s some brilliant material here (including the Dark Phoenix saga) and some very well written stories.
Young Justice
Similarities – Characters & Story
Given the number of satirical nods toward the Justice League in Invincible, it’s perhaps unsurprising then to find it on this list. The story here follows the Justice League. Or, more specifically, its members’ teen sidekicks. The series follows Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis as they set out to try and prove themselves to be heroes. Along the way the team battle a variety of different foes. There’s also some really nice twists in here too, coupled with some solid action. If you’re looking for a similarly paced animation, this one definitely fits the bill. What do you think of our picks? Do you agree? Are there any notable omissions? Let us know in the comments below!
