The Irregulars

Similarities – Teen Group

Netflix’s latest teen drama blends some familiar characters with the unfamiliar. Instead of space though, The Irregulars plunges us into an alt-Victorian world on the brink of being consumed by darkness. Whispers grow of a big threat and for one of the girls, Jessie, frightening visions cloud her mind. This falls to sister Bea to rally the group together, thrusting them headfirst into the throngs of the supernatural thanks to Dr Watson recruiting her to his cause. Orange Is The New Black

Similarities – Prisoners banding together & Characters

Orange Is The New Black was all the rage back in 2013 when it dropped on Netflix. Back then, the show felt fresh and original and for four seasons or so, it absolutely stuck to that mantra. The final two seasons however, do noticeably drop in quality The story here centers on Piper Chapman, a woman who’s confined for a year and a half behind bars after being convicted of a decade-old crime. Shocked and needing to adjust fast, Piper finds herself in over her head as the other inmates swarm around her. Slowly but surely she learns to adapt to life behind bars. The characters are what make this show so endearing though, but unlike Wentworth, OITNB leans into its comedy and melodrama a lot harder. There’s a darkly comic tone hanging to large parts of this show too, and it certainly makes for some great episodes. While it may not end strongly, it’s certainly a strong enough entry to recommend here.

The 100

Similarities – Fight For Survival & Teen Angst

The 100 is set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization. A spaceship housing humanity’s lone survivors happens to be humanity’s last hope for survival. With that in mind, 100 juvenile delinquents are thrown back to Earth, crash landing in the hopes of re-populating the planet. There’s a teen-drama affair with this one, featuring plenty of relationship issues and a suitably campy tone through much of its run-time. This is definitely one worth sticking with though and after a relatively wobbly first season, The 100 starts to find itself a lot more. With 7 seasons to get through and lots of drama along the way, this one should keep you very busy.

The Umbrella Academy

Similarities – Dysfunctional Team & Powers

The Umbrella Academy is really the full package. Slick action, a great ensemble of characters and some excellent story beats make this superhero story one of the best Netflix Originals on the platform. Both seasons build up nicely with a decent amount of time dedicated to fleshing out every character and giving them a compelling arc. While the world-ending cataclysmic event is still here, it’s handled in a pretty smart and original way. The action sequences are well shot and the simple story surrounding this misfit group of child-heroes teaming up to save the world is as engrossing as it is watchable. Misfits

Similarities – Banter & Characters

When it comes to a tight-knit group of teenagers forming an unlikely group, British series Misfits fits the bill perfectly. It’s a smartly written series that balances a combination of laugh out loud moments with much more profound bouts of drama. The story here revolves around a group of young offenders out doing community service. When they’re struck by lightning during a storm, each of these misfits start to develop superpowers. What follows is a nicely paced and well written adventure that’s perhaps darker than many many be expecting. However, it’s undeniably well written.

Nightflyers

Similarities – Mystery & Trip Gone Wrong

2018’s sci-fi series Nightflyers revolves around a crew of scientists embarking on a mission to investigate a mysterious alien signal. However, this soon turns into a claustrophobic nightmare as those onboard start to turn on one another. Heavily influenced by The Thing, this series does require you to suspend your belief a fair amount. However, it should do the trick for those looking for a tantalizing mystery. The characters however, may leave you scratching your head a little at their illogical actions! For the mystery alone though, this show is worth watching.

Origin

Similarities – Space & Paranoia

Origin’s story begins with a spaceship full of passengers, who slowly awaken to find the rest of the ship abandoned. Chunks of it have been destroyed too, destroyed, including the satellite and radio. This unnerving set-up is all that’s needed to bring with it a gloomy atmosphere and a big mystery. With some decent tension early on, Origin does squander its potential somewhat around the middle portion of episodes. However, there’s an undeniable “one more episode” pull with this one, making it an enjoyable sci-fi romp regardless of its plot issues. Lost In Space

Similarities – Sci-Fi & Characters

Lost In Space is a series designed to be watched with the whole family. Those with fond memories of the series of old should be prepared for a bit of a culture shock as this moody reboot is familiar in name and story only. The series begins with the Robinson family fighting against the odds to survive and escape, crash-landing on an alien planet and surrounded by dangers. The first season is a little paint-by-numbers in the way it presents the story. However, the second season onward certainly livens things up, delivering a pretty decent sci-fi romp. Dark Matter

Similarities – Sci-Fi & Mystery

Syfy’s 3 season mystery hit was abruptly cancelled back in 2017 – because of course it was! It’s a real shame too because this sci-fi series does a wonderful job with its mystery and characters. There’s a constant sense of dread clinging to this one and plenty of twists and turns along the way. It’s best to go into this one blind but do be aware, the show does end without a clear resolution at the end of season 3. Despite that though, the ride there is undeniably entertaining. For that alone, this is a show that’s worth checking out if you’re looking for a similar mystery box.

Wentworth Prison

Similarities – Prisoners & Melodrama

Wentworth takes the best parts of Prison Break and Orange Is The New Black and effectively blends them together, creating this brilliant Aussie prison drama. Split across multiple seasons, the storylines in Wentworth are brutal, unrelenting and very melodramatic. Sure, the later seasons do lose their way a little, but there’s a consistency to this one that make it such an enthralling watch. The story centers on Bea Smith, a woman put behind bars for murdering her husband. Once inside prison though, Bea is forced to juggle her own inner demons with a hostile hierarchical prison system. Most shows of this nature live or die based on the characters inhabiting the world, and thankfully Wentworth features a great array of interesting, well fleshed out persona.
