Night Teeth is Netflix’s latest vampire flick. It’s a campy, fun little film and although it sometimes lacks bite, it’s an enjoyable watch nonetheless. Collateral
When it comes to movie influences, Collateral is probably as close as you’ll get to Night Teeth in terms of basic story premise and action. This action thriller follows LA cabbie Max Durocher, who finds himself a hostage of a contract killer, forced to drive while this killer does his rounds, targeting different hits across a single night in Los Angeles. Well written and exciting, Collateral is a solid choice and well worth checking out.
Underworld
If you’re after a film that depicts a similar ancient war between two different factions, Underworld is your jam. The story centers on Selene, a vampire warrior who becomes entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves. However, she falls in love with Michael in the process, a human who’s sought after by the werewolves for hidden reasons. This fun sci-fi/horror hybrid certainly isn’t an award winner but it is a big explosive summer blockbuster perfect to switch off to with a big bowl of popcorn in hand.
Till Death
Till Death is another recent horror movie, one with a simple premise that’s executed nicely. The story centers on a woman called Emma, who’s left handcuffed to her dead husband as part of a sick revenge plot. Unable to unshackle herself, Emma is forced to survive two killers who show up, ready to finish the job. Till Death is a fun movie in truth, paying homage to old-school thrillers of its time with a few genuine “what on earth are you doing?!” moments. Still, this one’s good value and a fun ride.
What We Do In The Shadows
Before the excellent serial adaptation, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement teamed up to produce a cleverly written and hilariously funny mockumentary movie on vampire life. Viago, Deacon and Vladislav are our vampires, and they riff on the difficulties of modern life, including paying rent, doing chores and overcoming flat-mate conflicts. Hilariously witty and full of well-timed joked, What We Do In The Shadows is a must-watch.
Blade
Blade is absolutely insane. It’s a bonkers movie, one that ramps up its craziness for the sequels – including Blade: Trinity which goes a little too far into the realm of campy ridiculousness. However, the story for the first (and best) movie centers on a half-vampire, half-mortal man named Blade who finds himself the protector of the mortal race, setting out to slay evil vampires. There’s lots of action, lots of gore and lots of homages to the comics it’s based on; Blade is a bloody good time!
Black as Night
Black as Night is one of the more polarizing entries on this list (half our critics loved it, the others not so much) but the premise is simple and has enough to sink your teeth into. In its simplest form, Black as Night is a coming of age drama wrapped up in a thinly dressed veil of vampire horror. This movie lives and breathes YA territory, centering on teenager Shawna, who has some serious self-esteem issues. As she pines for local hottie Chris, she finds herself caught up in a deadly battle with vampires who happen to be living in New Orleans. With the city gripped with a heroin epidemic and struggling to get back on its feet following Hurricane Katrina, Shawna teams up with best friend Pedro, Chris and a strange rich girl to save the day from the vampire threat. Nosferatu
Ah yes, the classic. Before Dracula graced the big-screen, in 1992 a very different and terrifying creature haunted cinemas; Nosferatu. Unlike the charm and seductive beauty of Dracula, Vampire Count Orlok is grotesque, and that channels into the movie’s appeal. The story is pretty simple and centers around a vampire that sets his sights on a new couple who arrive in town, specifically that of real estate agent Hutter’s wife. Both artistic and disturbing, Nosferatu should be a must-watch for vampire fans.
The Babysitter
If you’re looking for a good teen horror movie, Netflix Original The Babysitter certainly has some stand-out moments. The story revolves around Cole, a boy who’s in love with his babysitter Bee. One night, in a moment of defiance, Cole secretly stays up past his bedtime to discover that his babysitter is actually a cold-blooded killer in league with the Devil. Desperate to survive his ordeal, Cole finds himself spending the night evading Bee and her band of killers, who will stop at nothing to prevent Cole from revealing their dark secret. Part comedy horror/part slasher, The Babysitter channels similar vibes to Night Teeth by throwing its lead character into an unspeakable ordeal.
Vampires Vs the Bronx
Vampires vs. the Bronx feels like The Lost Boys VS Stranger Things. Combining elements from both, this horror/comedy mash-up falls straight into the realm of mediocrity – but it’s still good fun. The plot revolves around three young teens – Miguel, Luis and Bobby – who start to realize something weird is going on with their town. Shops and businesses are closing up and a wealthy businessman named Frank Polidori has arrived to monopolize the Bronx. Coinciding with this are a string of not-suspicious-at-all missing people reports that form the backbone for our story. As this 80 minute picture progresses, the truth about what’s happening is revealed and – as the title suggests – it causes a war to break out between the vampires and those living within the Bronx. Twilight
Twilight is a perfect character study showcasing toxic obsession. Or vampire/human romance; you be the decider! The story revolves around a teenage girl called Bella who finds herself wrapped up in a romance with an immortal vampire hiding out at a high school called Edward Cullen. One thing leads to another and Bella abandons her friends, runs off with Edward and becomes embedded up in the vampire world. Aside from the obvious mortal/immortal difference and the ensuing love triangle that follows in the messy and questionable sequels, the first film is a great example of that thin line between love and obsession being crossed and bringing big consequences.
